IYAFP Announces New Partnerships and Support of National Youth-led Family Planning Conferences

The Gates Institute is the main supporter of the International Youth Alliance for Family Planning (IYAFP), a youth-founded and -led organization that grew out of the 2013 International Conference on Family Planning and now has country coordinators in over 50 countries worldwide. Here, we share the latest updates from IYAFP.

New Partnerships

IYAFP has partnered with Population Reference Bureau (PRB) to implement the youth data collection for Empowering Evidence-Driven Advocacy (EEDA), a new three-year project (2017-20) supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The goals of the project are to improve implementation of existing family planning policies, especially those that support youth access to and use of contraception, and to generate new funding and policy commitments for family planning in response to evidence-driven advocacy in 6 African countries.

IYAFP has embarked on a new partnership with YouAct, a youth-led, independent NGO working to support young people advocating for their sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in Europe. YouAct is made up of youth volunteers from different European Council Member states. Like IYAFP, YouAct aims for a world where young people have access to accurate information and youth-friendly services, enabling them to decide freely and responsibly about all aspects of their sexuality and reproductive lives. IYAFP looks forward to working with YouAct to enhance their efforts. Stay tuned for more details on upcoming projects.

IYAFP is working with Mindthis Magazine to publish progressive, youth-empowering articles related to sexual and reproductive health. Every month, IYAFP publishes a new article. Check out their piece on access to contraception in Malaysia and Germany for World Contraception Day!

Seed Grants to Country Coordinators in Four Countries

IYAFP has recently awarded seed grants to four Country Coordinators located in Thailand, Togo, Pakistan, and Kenya. These projects will further IYAFP's mission to improve access to quality family planning information and services.

IYAFP Piloting National Youth-led Conferences in Two Countries

This year, IYAFP is piloting the organization of youth-led national family planning conferences in two countries: Bangladesh and Madagascar.

With SERAC-Bangladesh and in partnership with UNFPA, Partners in Population and Development (PPD), and Right Here Right Now - Youth SRHR, IYAFP jointly hosted the Bangladesh 2nd National Youth Conference on Family Planning 2017 in Dhaka on October 11-12, 2017!
. More than 200 young delegates from across the country joined the conference with the aim to learn, share experiences, and engage in policy dialogues and programs around youth health, reproductive rights, and commitments. More information can be found here.

The national conference in Madagascar will take place in early 2018.

New Executive Leadership

IYAFP is pleased to announce that Norhan Bader, Marietta Wildt, and Fila Magnus have joined the organization’s executive leadership in a volunteer capacity as our new Director of Projects, Public Relations, and Communications, respectively, to support the youth alliance, our country coordinators and members in delivering on our mission. IYAFP is staying true to its values by having an entire executive team comprised of youth under the age of 30.

IYAFP is also saying goodbye to Isaiah Owolabi, one of IYAFP's co-founders and Co-Executive Director, in November. Isaiah is aging out of the organization, and his transition out will make room for peers and fellow youth leaders within the organization to rise to leadership positions and continue to fight for young people's right to quality family planning.

IYAFP Members Named to the 2017 Cohort of 120 Under 40: The New Generation of Family Planning Leaders
