Director’s Message on Solidarity Against Racial Injustice

Gates Institute’s mission is to improve the lives of the most marginalized and vulnerable among us – utilizing science and scholarship to bring about social change.   All lives are of equal value and we stand with those calling for an end to the ongoing racial injustice.  The lives of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor matter.  Black lives matter.

While the world continues to fight the greatest global pandemic of our time, we stand in resolute opposition against racial injustice and violence while also preserving the right to reproductive health. Both are public health issues that disproportionately impact communities of color in the United States and marginalized populations around the globe.

The global health community must challenge ourselves to be actively anti-racist in all that we do. Doing so is central to everything that we stand for.  This is not a time for silence or inaction. Gates Institute commits to addressing all levels of social and structural inequality and prejudice in our work each and every day.

Together, we will overcome these scourges that continue to threaten the health, safety, wellbeing and lives of our colleagues, friends, allies, and partners worldwide.

In solidarity,

Jose “Oying” Rimon II
